Adam Johnson

July 3, 2024 photography

I've first photographed Adam, an award-winning Canadian conductor, while covering Riopelle Symphonique, a musical opus signed Serge Fiori and Blair Thomas, produced by GSI Musique, back in 2023.

I approached the event in my typical stealth-documentary approach, hoping to capture it as authentically as possible, while Adam appeared passionate and attentive to every person and detail involved. The vibe was definitely there. I was impressed and inspired, and hoped the images would do him justice.

It turns out they did, as he later saw the images, liked them so much he called me to book a private session at my studio. Color me humble and enthused.

And so the big day happened and went, with my notion of time blurring everything in the process. That's because I saw Adam a few times on a few other recordings later this year, and was struck when he reminded me of how long had elapsed since our shoot. I then realized I had never shared the images before on my socials. So here I am, doing just that.

Below are my favorite excerpts from both shoots, the recording and the studio shots.

The studio

The following portraits were shot in my studio with a Nikon Z6ii and a 85mm at f/2 aperture. Lit with a single Amaran 200d and a giant 6' wide deep umbrella by Godox, bouncing off a reflector to Adam's left. Color graded and edited in Capture One.

The recording

These were also shot with a Nikon Z6ii with both the 85mm and the 40mm, set at f/2 each. Ambient lighting. Color graded and edited in Capture One.
